Switch lubing is the custom-keyboard ritual: opening every switch, brushing lubricant onto slider and spring, and reassembling — 2–4 hours per keyboard. The community swears by it. The honest assessment: it is real, it is transformative, and it is optional.

What lubing cannot fix
- A bad switch design: lube refines; it does not redesign. A mushy tactile stays mushy.
- Clicky switches (partially): lubing the click bar or jacket silences the click — a feature-killer. Lube around it carefully or skip.
- Stabilizer rattle: that is a stabilizer-lube job (different, also mandatory in the culture).
The economics
Factory-lubed switches (Gateron Oil Kings, many modern lines) deliver 80% of the modded experience for the cost of choosing them — the DIY culture of 2018 became the manufacturing standard of today. Lube manually when: your switches are legacy favorites, you enjoy the meditative hours, or you chase the last 20%. Skip when: the board is stock-and-happy, the switches are pre-lubed, or your Saturday has other claims.
The tools: a switch opener, 0.5–1 g of Krytox 205g0 (sliders) and 105 (springs), a small brush, and patience. The result: your spec-sheet switch, with the edges polished off — and the force curve exactly as the manufacturer drew it, just quieter about it.
